Dirk Elston, M.D.
Dr. Elston is Director of the Department of Dermatology and dermatopathology fellowship program director at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. He is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College. He completed his dermatology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a dermatopathology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Elston has a long-standing interest in dermatopathology, infectious diseases, and scarring alopecia. He is the author of more than 225 peer reviewed articles, as well as numerous book chapters. In addition to acting as series editor for Elsevier’s Requisites in Dermatology series and editing the dermatopathology text in the series, he is editor-in-chief of emedicine dermatology and is one of the three authors of Andrews’ Diseases of the Skin.
He has been involved in the American Academy of Dermatology mentorship and leadership programs as well as the North American Hair Research Society mentorship program. He has received the Darl Vanderplueg Excellence in Teaching Award, the Brooke and Wilford Hall Medical Center Department of Medicine Outstanding Teacher Award, the Brooke Army Medical Center Department of Pathology Outstanding Teacher Award, and the American Academy of Dermatology Presidential Citation for leadership efforts in the development of evidence-based quality performance measures for dermatology.
